Advanced Manufacturing Engineering

Support transformation of all POs towards a single manufacturing ecosystem with highest level of automation, productivity and efficiency.

Organization Chart

Advanced Manufacturing Engineering:

  • Reports to Advanced Manufacturing Engineer Manager, who in turn reports to the Head of Transformation. Head of Transformation has three direct reports and reports to the MD SBU Head / SLUK General Manager.
  • Establishes and maintains close working relationship with Line Manager, Transformation Manager other Advanced Manufacturing Engineers and wider work community.
  • Supports global production transfers, PO transformation and NPDI with a balanced degree of ‘self-execution’ and achievement through others built upon automation leadership, relationships, and respect.
  • Required to support, as necessary, a separate Manufacturing Engineering support team that directly reports to Head of Operations.

Key Responsibilities

Most relevant duties required to ensure that Job Purpose satisfied. Rank in order of importance

  1. Working in close collaboration with Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Manager build ‘automation’ strategy and help co-ordinate SLUK ‘Operations’ transformation journey (Kaikaku methodology) moving from largely manual to automated site. Become a recognized face and respected voice of automation within metal detection business.
  2. Work within a small Advanced Manufacturing Engineering team (and all that entails of a modern professional) with prime focus on manufacturing transformation, via greater investment in automation delivering significant improvements in productivity and efficiency. 
  3. Support strategic manufacturing projects to deliver ‘local to local’ global manufacturing supply chain.
  4. Establish best practice (internal and external) and formulate strategies, business justification and plans to support transformation of all POs towards a single manufacturing ecosystem with highest level of automation, productivity and efficiency.
  5. Maintain effective collaboration with operational support teams, providing support as required.
  6. Support all new and strategic manufacturing engineering activities e.g. NPDI. Drive the creation and implementation of best practice manufacturing engineering; planning vision, strategy, policies, processes and procedures to aid and improve operational performance.
  7. Devise, develop, document, and promote business case and justification for transformational investment projects with widest consideration to deliver compelling ROI. Do not just focus on immediate SLUK benefit, duly consider internal and external to MT. 
  8. Support transformation of all POs towards a single manufacturing ecosystem with highest level of automation, productivity and efficiency.
  9. Devise, manage and execute transformation projects in accordance with SternDrive / PMO processes to significantly: 
    -    Improve productivity and reduce lead time.
    -    Reduce costs and improving overall profitability.
  10. Build internal and external ‘automation’ networks and partnerships. Deliver knowledge, training, and experience to own and other departments / individuals to improve business wide automation and digitalization bench strength, supporting ‘war for talent’ (attract and retain).
  11. Comply with the Health, Safety and Environmental policies and procedures.
  12. Undertake any other reasonable projects and tasks associated with overall business objectives, when requested.
  13. Global travel will be required in this role, sometimes at short notice but unlikely to be regular / intense.

Job’s difficulties and challenges

  • Achieving transformational / radical change from within a small team (elevated levels of motivation, self-drive, integrity and relationship build is fundamental). Moving from manual based operations to automated with high degree of integration.
  • Delivering the strong voice of Automation along with Kaikaku mind-set is essential in a busy PO that historically focused on shorter term goals e.g. month end, immediate customer service issues, achievement of budget, etc.
  • Development of creative business cases, with greater outwards thinking, to deliver compelling justification for capital investments. Budget should not get in the way of ambition.
  • Opening-up other SBU PO’s to be transparent and collaborative on ‘exact copy’ methodology and sharing of data and best practice without direct responsibility for their operations.

Communication and relations

  • Exciting new position within new ‘transformation’ department, reporting to the Head of Department. Considered to be a joint SBU / PO role. 
  • PO necessitates focus on SLUK ‘Operations’ with business wide communication, engagement, and collaboration at levels (top to bottom).
  • SBU necessitates collaboration with other SBU POs building trust and forging key relationships across cultural and geographical boundaries.
  • Job entails building strong internal and external networks as outlined throughout key responsibilities above.
  • Effective communication and relations with MT SternDrive and SMART Manufacturing (including LMES) are essential.

Job profile

Degree qualified in a manufacturing engineering / technical background is sought, ideally with degree of specialism in automation and more specifically production test systems. However, it is permissible that this could be waived for someone with proven track record closely aligned to majority of requirements within the job description (majoring on automation and manufacturing transformation).

Specific knowledge

  • LEAN / Agile / Six Sigma (ideally green belt and above).
  • Latest manufacturing, inspection and test technologies and pathways to integrate such machinery (automation, additive manufacturing etc) with digital technologies (AI, IoT, AR, etc). Knowledge gained from first-hand application experience and / or research across E2E operations (Inventory, Material Handling, Manufacture, Assembly, Inspection & Test) 
  • Differentiation between Kaizen and Kaikaku from having led impactful transformational projects.
  • Project management disciplines and process improvement methodologies.
  • In addition to traditional IT skills candidate is expected to have practitioner knowledge of factory management system, data management and integration, encompassing automation protocols, communications, software, sensing and networking.

Languages skills

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English is essential.

Previous professional experience

Candidate expected to have worked as an Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent), ideally across a range of industries, products and manufacturing processes. 
During this time candidate should have developed and deployed a wide range of manufacturing tools and methodologies (including CI and quality) with tangible impactful results on manufacturing transformation and NPDI.

Manufacturing transformation via the introduction of ‘automation’ and step improvements in new product manufacture via DfX are essential. 

Able to demonstrate experience of working within a challenging manufacturing environment.

Demonstrated experience in building and cultivating effective partnerships with a broad range of stakeholders from idea to delivery and future longevity but with maximum emphasis on execution.

Other: Professional status is desirable along with any extra curricula activities that support wider industry or fuel passion for automation, digitalisation and business transformation. Willingness to travel, sometimes at short notice (short haul and long haul).

Training

Candidate should be an established and competent Advanced Manufacturing Engineering / Automation Engineer. A structured induction and company orientation programme will support the onboarding process. Thereafter other company processes and programmes are in place to identify further training needs and personal development.
