Coffee company has seen major benefits from lines in support as well as production

Finlay Beverages says the three Rovema dosing, bagging and case-packing lines it operates at 50 bags per minute (bpm) have not only proved more efficient but also been far better-supported.

Finlay decided to invest in the three fully-integrated turnkey packaging lines when it realised that its legacy equipment was no longer up to the job. The systems could not run at speeds higher than 35 bpm and required six operators per line. Frequent downtime, spare part shortages, and growing output pressures made it clear that a change was needed, says production manager Adie Williams.

“The coffee industry was growing fast, and our old machines simply couldn’t keep up,” he says. “We had to put on three shifts, including weekends, just to stay afloat.”

Williams commends Rovema for its commitment and support, reporting that, if its engineers are ever required, they are on-site within 24 hours.

“It wasn’t just about selling a machine — it was about understanding our requirements and building a long-term solution,” he says.

Each of the three lines includes a Rovema SDH Dosing Unit, for precise and consistent coffee volumes, linked to a BVC 260 vertical form-fill-seal machine. The BVC 260 produces Stabilo bags with valve application, ultrasonic film tracking and a dual printing capability. Final case-packing on each line comes courtesy of a Rovema EW-TI system, said to be efficient in grouping and stacking. There are also vibratory infeed conveyors and other transport systems.

Gary Webley, development maintenance manager at Finlay, believes Rovema’s service package is one of the best he has experienced. “The machines are advanced yet simple to use, easy to maintain, and extremely reliable,” he adds, regarding the equipment itself.

As well as output increases and reductions in numbers of operators required, the plant has seen a dramatic cut in the time needed to change products, minimal downtime – and an ability to run recyclable film across all lines.
