Collaborative robot is a first for automation provider, with heavy focus on life sciences

Epson says its first cobot will respond to growing demand  from the life sciences as well as pharma for high accuracy and rigorous hygiene needs up to clean-room standards.

In fact, the company says its first industrial cobot is designed to achieve successful human-machine interactions across a diverse range of industries, including manufacturing and logistics, alongside the rapidly-evolving life sciences sector.

It will launch the AX6-A901S cobot at the Automatica 2025 show at Messe München, Germany, in late June. The package includes the new high-performance 6-axis Epson AX6-A901S lightweight carbon robot, the Epson RC-A101 controller and AX Portal programming system.

“As the life sciences and pharmaceutical industries continue to grow, demand for highly accurate operations and stringent hygiene management has become paramount,” explains Volker Spanier, head of robotics at Epson Europe. “To address these important needs, Epson’s new collaborative robot has been designed to be clean-room compatible, ensuring high-precision control over intricate tasks performed in laboratories and pharmaceutical settings.”

The company underlines the “optimally-balanced design”, with a payload capacity of 6kg and an arm length of 900 mm. The cobot’s lightweight and space-saving features make it suitable for both laboratory transportation and production line integration, it adds.

The RC-A101 controller is also compact and light, says Epson, designed to be suitable for installation on automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), with dimensions of 440mm width x 205mm depth x 135mm height, and weighing less than 6 kg.

The AX6-A901S features clean transfer capabilities compliant with ISO 14644-1 Class 5 standards, says Epson, and dust/drip-proof performance compliant with IP54. The robot supports Python programming, widely used across different industries, and is compatible with a range of power sources.

Sales of the AX6-A901S will begin in the autumn of 2025.
