Egg producer moves to more flexible and reliable C-wrap label to hit higher speeds

UK company Bird Brothers has replaced a top-labelling system for egg cartons with a C-wrap alternative from Bizerba, and can now label a range of pack sizes and eggs simultaneously.

The Bedford-based business was using an ageing top-label applicator that was becoming unreliable, and replacement parts were no longer available. With customer expectations continuing to rise and packaging diversity increasing, a more advanced, efficient and flexible labelling system was needed.

“Our previous machine was causing operational headaches, and parts had become obsolete. We needed a reliable machine,” says commercial director Matthew Bird. “We often pack different-sized packs and different-sized eggs at the same time. We needed the ability to continue with this.”

After reviewing several options, Bird Brothers chose the GLM-Ievo 120 C-wrap labelling system from Bizerba, along with the GT-12C for price labelling. Both the added marketing value of C-wrap labels and the flexibility the system provided were important considerations.

The new labels mean an improved profile for the brand, since they are clearly visible, even when cartons are stacked at point-of-sale. The design also creates a point of difference in comparison with other packs and brands.

“We needed a high-speed machine capable of labelling up to 100 packs per minute,” Bird explains. “We visited [Bizerba UK’s] head office a couple of times and had a couple of site meetings prior to installation.” All-in-all, he says the egg producer has been very impressed with the equipment.

As well as hardware, Bizerba provides labels, service and support. Productivity has been boosted not simply by line speeds but also by the smaller number of manual interventions required, with reduced downtime.
