ABB Robotics has launched a new software product which is said to let robots powered by OmniCore recognise and adapt to their surroundings using any third-party camera.
OmniCore EyeMotion enables users of all skill levels to combine a simple web interface with drag-and-drop sensors or cameras, providing fast image acquisition and recognition, even in more complex applications.
“Over the past decade, we have evolved AI vision to give robots ‘eyes’ that can see the world in 3D, but previously this required advanced camera hardware,” says Marc Segura, president of ABB Robotics.
“In one step, OmniCore EyeMotion grants any robot the ability to both see and understand the world around it, for a wide range of 2D and 3D vision-based applications, advancing autonomy and versatility.”
It is fully integrated into ABB’s software suite, says the supplier, complementing its RobotStudio programming and simulation tool, to facilitate rapid set-up and deployment. ABB claims it achieves a commissioning time reduction of up to 90% compared to custom solutions.
OmniCore EyeMotion, it adds, will transform a wide range of robot tasks, from item sorting to quality inspection, across sectors including logistics, packaging, food and beverage.
In more complex applications, the software can be combined with ABB’s Automatic Path Planning Online, which can plan and execute optimum, collision-free paths around obstacles and moving objects in real time. This capability can operate continually and without human intervention, ABB explains, increasing autonomy and reducing cycle times by up to 50 percent.
As part of its ambition to create Autonomous Versatile Robotics, the company says its next-generation robots will autonomously plan and perform diverse, complex tasks in real time and without human intervention. They will do this by uniting vision, precision, speed, dexterity and mobility, through the power of generative AI.
