Area scan vs. line scan cameras

Area scan cameras are ideal for applications where the entire object is visible in one frame or both the camera and object are stationary, such as in inspection tasks.

Line scan cameras, on the other hand, capture one line of pixels at a time, building a 2D image as either the camera or the object moves. In these applications, high resolution and speed are often critical.
