3D cameras open up an additional dimension of machine vision: in addition to length and width, you can also capture height and volume – the basis for precise dimensional inspections, surface checks, or reliable robot guidance.
As a manufacturer-independent supplier, STEMMER IMAGING offers one of the widest portfolios of 3D camera solutions. From compact stereo systems to high-precision laser triangulation sensors, you will find the right technology for almost any application.
Smart cameras are an elegant solution that combines the sensor, processor and I/O in a compact housing, often no bigger than a standard industrial camera. These products offer an intuitive user interface that can be understood easily with training.

The term 'area' refers to the type of sensor built into the camera. An area scan camera consists of a rectangular, two-dimensional sensor (e.g. 1920 x 1080 pixels). Unlike line scan cameras, which capture only one line per exposure, area scan cameras capture a complete image of an area in one go.
This technology is particularly advantageous for applications in which the object is stationary or moves only minimally, such as in quality control, robotics applications, traffic monitoring systems and electronics manufacturing.

Line scan cameras are specialised camera systems that capture images line by line rather than as a whole. They are ideal for applications in which the test object moves continuously beneath the camera, such as on conveyor belts or rotating rollers.
Unlike area scan cameras, line scan cameras enable extremely high resolution and image quality, even with very fast processes. They are therefore the preferred choice for inspection tasks, print image checks, surface analysis and sorting processes — wherever precise image processing in motion is required.

Together with the illumination system, the optics form the first link in the imaging chain of a vision system. Selecting a suitable lens is crucial for the quality of the final image and has an impact on factors such as achievable speed, measuring accuracy, error-free operation, reproducibility and reliability of the downstream analysis.

Selecting and correctly configuring the optimal lighting set-up is one of the key factors when designing a vision system and can greatly facilitate subsequent image analysis. STEMMER IMAGING offers a wide range of lighting for industrial machine vision applications including advanced controllers using high powered LED light sources.
The variety of applications for which a vision system is used, requires different acquisition methods. In imaging applications, a frame grabber is usually used to capture video data and transfer it to a PC. This is the most robust, secure and flexible way of capturing any type of signal and storing it in the PC for further processing.
