Factories of the Future: The Benefits of Going Smart

From IoT-powered machine sensors to AI analytics, smart technologies are having a transformative impact on manufacturing. Such developments are enhancing data collection and analysis, enabling manufacturers to draw on real-time insights and make more informed decisions. We’ll explore such smart factory benefits here.

The Rise of Smart Factories

The collection and analysis of manufacturing data used to be a time-consuming manual process, with workers having to pull data from isolated systems for the identification of production issues. However, today’s smart technologies bring the data into one central system. This saves time and cuts costs; enabling manufacturers to optimise production.

With IoT, AI, and automation working together, smart factories identify potential issues before they escalate. Predictive maintenance minimises downtime, with connected technologies providing full visibility into the supply chain. This helps manufacturers improve demand forecasting, inventory management, and logistics. Machine learning technologies also draw on the analysis of past manufacturing data, generating recommendations and prompting adjustments without the need for human input.

Other smart factory benefits include:

  • Greater quality control - with systems continuously monitoring and identifying production issues in real-time.
  • Improved flexibility and customisation - with manufacturers being alerted to changes of market conditions and customer expectations.
  • Enhanced worker safety and satisfaction - with technologies increasingly able to perform manufacturing activities in the dull, dangerous, and dirty categories.
  • Increased competitiveness - with smart factory integration making for greater efficiency, quality, and customer satisfaction.

Such benefits are being realised across diverse industries including electronics, pharmaceuticals, and automotive manufacturing. Indeed, a report published by FourJaw Manufacturing Analytics has revealed that nine out of every ten UK manufacturers are planning or progressing smart factory initiatives. The integration of AI, automation, and data analytics is becoming increasingly common, with many manufacturers investing in new tools for better insight and operational performance. The value is clear, with Vodafone reporting that smart factories could provide a £6.3 billion boost to UK manufacturing by 2030.

Examples of Success

The benefits of smart factory technologies have been highlighted in various editions of Machinery Update. For instance, the July/August 2024 edition focused on the increased efficiency realised by food and drink manufacturers through the wider adoption of automation (pages 40-41). In one instance, Europe’s largest meat manufacturing company, Danish Crown, turned to a leading manufacturing intelligence provider for the integration of advanced analytics across its global operations. Having previously struggled in the collection of reliable data, the integration of new monitoring technologies made for a 15% increase in overall equipment effectiveness.

In another example, the November/December 2024 edition (page 21) focused on the integration of nearly 200 sensors at Greencroft Bottling’s wine storage and filling facility. These sensors have enabled the automatic monitoring of wine bottle levels, pressures and temperatures. With this enhanced monitoring capability the manufacturer can be more confident of identifying product issues for greater customer satisfaction.
