Shrink Wrap vs Vacuum Packing: Choosing the Right Machine

6 October 2026

The choice of packaging can be the difference between success and failure in meeting the customer’s expectations. With a direct impact on everything from product longevity to quality and perceived value, it’s generally a choice between vacuum and shrink wrapping.

Read on as we explain how such machines work, with guidance on the ideal investment for optimum food safety, retail appeal, and cost efficiency. With this knowledge, you’ll be more confident in exploring the latest vacuum and shrink wrap systems during the 2027 PPMA Show.

Vacuum and Shrink Wrapping: The Key Differences

Extracting the surrounding air from packaged products, vacuum packaging machines apply a heat seal that forms a barrier against oxygen and moisture. Through the prevention of oxidation and microbial growth, they significantly reduce the rate of spoilage and preserve product quality.

Shrink wrapping machines enable the heated application of tight shrink-wrap film for improved product appearance and the prevention of dust build-up. Typically in the form of PVC, PE, or POF, such shrink films can be layered over various shapes and formats.

Shrink wrapping machines are the ideal choice where visual appeal and cost-effective bundling are among the priorities.

Other key differences are highlighted in this table:

Vacuum packaging

Shrink wrapping

Most suitable for

Meat, cheese, ready meals, electronics, medical supplies

Retail goods, books, cosmetics, palletised loads

Shelf-life extension

Potentially years (depending on the product/storage)

Possibly months (with primary protection against external contaminants)

Machine cost

Relatively high initial cost (but with a strong ROI for high-value goods and perishables)

Lower initial cost (with efficiency in the processing of variously shaped products)

Environmental considerations

Often involving the application of multi-layer plastic films (making recycling a challenge)

Also involving the application of plastic films (but with sorting and recycling less of a challenge)

Making the Right Choice

Vacuum packaging is the best choice for preserving foods such as raw and cooked meat, cheese, snacks, and grains. It is also recommended for electronics, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and other products sensitive to moisture and oxygen. Suitable for a variety of catering and hospitality applications, vacuum packaging machines are a great choice where the priority is waste reduction.

Shrink-wrapping machines are better suited for retail-ready presentation, enabling tight, glossy product packaging. They can be used for the bundling or multi-packing of items for efficient distribution and retail promotion. With the capacity for large and irregular items, shrink wrapping is ideal where the priorities include visual appeal, tamper evidence, and cost-effective protection.

With the increasingly stringent regulations and customer demands, it’s vital to consider the environmental impacts of vacuum and shrink wrapping. Manufacturers are encouraged to source recyclable and lower-impact films where possible. The film thickness and packaging design should also be optimised for waste reduction.

Looking Ahead: Automate UK Week 2027

Set to be held at the NEC, Birmingham, the PPMA Show 2027 promises to be an unmissable opportunity for the live comparison of vacuum and shrink wrapping systems. Co-located with the Automation UK Show as part of Automate UK Week, it will include demonstrations of machines from manufacturers such as Ishida, Multivac, and Holmach.

Register your interest today and be among the first to receive updates in advance of the UK’s greatest automation showcase.
