Machine vision over a recycling line will reflect resolution requirements, optics, lighting needs, and of course software, VA Imaging spells out.
As automated waste sorting becomes increasingly important, machine vision is playing a key role. It is typically installed above a conveyor belt to capture images of mixed materials in real time. Image processing software then identifies items such as plastics, metals, paper, and composites based on colour, shape and surface characteristics. This allows the sorting process to become faster, more repeatable and less dependent on manual inspection, says VA.
System performance starts with the camera. In recycling applications, objects are moving continuously, so image quality must remain stable even at speed. That is why global shutter cameras are often the preferred choice, according to VA.
Resolution is equally important, the supplier adds. The camera must deliver enough detail to detect relevant features while covering the required field of view across the conveyor. Selecting the right resolution is not simply a matter of choosing the biggest sensor available. It requires matching pixel count to belt width, object size, and inspection goals.
According to VA, a strong waste sorting setup also depends on the right optics and lighting. The lens must be matched to the sensor size, working distance, and field of view to ensure sharp, usable images. Lighting is just as critical, especially in recycling environments where objects vary widely in colour, reflectivity and texture.
Equally essential is the practical side of system integration. Cable length, mounting, interface choice, enclosed housings, and ambient light control can all affect real-world performance.
And finally, software completes the picture, says VA. Some customers use established machine vision tools, while others develop their own applications in environments such as Python. VA Imaging supports both approaches with hardware expertise and practical guidance, it explains, helping customers build a solution that works as a complete system rather than a collection of separate components.
